When you're the owner of the world's biggest torrent-sharing site, the last thing you'd expect to land you in trouble would be a totally legitimate (and legal) purchase via iTunes. But that's what happened to 30-year-old Ukrainian Artem Vaulin a.k.a "tirm," owner and operator of KickassTorrents (KAT), who was yesterday arrested and charged in Poland for criminal copyright infringement and money laundering. He's been accused of illegally reproducing and distributing hundreds of millions of copies of movies, video games, TV shows and music albums totalling more than $1 billion. The US is now waiting to extradite him.

Using basic website-tracking services, Der-Yeghiayan was able to uncover (via a reverse DNS search) the hosts of seven apparent KAT website domains:,,,,, and This dug up two Chicago IP addresses, which were used as KAT name servers for more than four years. Agents were then able to legally gain a copy of the server's access logs (explaining why it was federal authorities in Chicago that eventually charged Vaulin with his alleged crimes).

The use of torrent trackers to spread malware is a well-known practice; cybercriminals disguise it as popular software, computer games, media files, and other sought-after content. We detected one such campaign early this year, when The Pirate Bay (TPB) tracker filled up with harmful files used to distribute malware under the guise of cracked copies of paid programs.

People who have heard about TPB should have heard about KAT (KickAssTorrents). This popular and aged BitTorrent featured with a rich collection of torrents for movies, television shows, music, ebooks, and many other contents. Many people think this site has been offline as it is abducted by the US government in 2016 and in July of the next year, its creator Artem Vaulin was arrayed in Poland for hosting unauthorized material. However, the fact is there are lots of mirror and proxy sites that work flawlessly and will meet your torrenting need.

For unknown reasons, ShanaProject didn't receive lots of maintains and updates in recent years. The latest update of its post, Twitter, and social media accounts was in 2017. However, this one of the oldest anime-dedicated torrent sites created in 2008 is still receiving 11K visitors per day. Herein, you can find torrents of many classic anime series, as like, Digimon Adventure, Tonikaku Kawaii, kebukuro West Gate Park, Magatsu Wahrheit: Zuerst, and Black Clover.

Regardless of some pop-up ads, the interface of YTS is very clean overall. YTS has a well-organized movie torrent library. It allows you to refine the search result by use filters based on genre, countries, rating, the published year, and quality to fast locate the liked movies. What's more, it offers you a subtitle-downloading website for easily getting the subtitle files for a foreign movie.

Zooqle is a relatively new site that is not known by many. This ads-free torrent site is designed with a robust search box that enables you to look up any wanted contents from the 4800000 verified torrents including 1700 + TV shows and 45000 movies. The official website now is blocked in a few countries, but it gives some mirror sites that still work nicely.

LimeTorrents is a torrent search engine that doesn't keep torrent files, but give users the links for 10 million active torrents that can be downloaded and utilized for peer-to-peer file sharing under BitTorrent protocol. It allows users to add comments for torrent sources and provides the health score. In this way, users can get right and safe torrent files. The interface is a big plus for LimeTorrents if you can ignore the pop-up ads.

1337X is a community-based public tracker that boasts a vast of verified torrents. It didn't start the fast growth until the block of KickassTorrents, and that was already the 9th year after it was born. Anyway, it is rated as the second largest torrent site as of 2022 by some professional torrent analysis blogs. You can find virtually everything on this impressive site, all newly released media, regional movies, cracked computer software, mobile applications, games, and resources that are unavailable on other torrent sites.

The torrent sites offer you plenty of torrent files. As I have mentioned earlier, the more the seers, the faster the downloading speed. A decent torrent site gives you access to a plethora of torrent files with a big amount of seeders.

No torrent site can guarantee all the seeds you are looking up are available. And the quality of the given seeds is hard to tell. On the one hand, the lack of access to verify whether the seeds are safe or legal may put your computer under the attack of malware and virus.

To give an example, KryptoCibule is a notorious malware that would pose a serious threat to crypto holders. It is mainly disseminated through torrent files. On the other hand, the download speed would decrease to be 0kb/s if there is no other people are involved process or the content publisher is offline.

A Swedish prosecutor on Monday called for one year jail terms for four men charged with running The Pirate Bay, one of the world's top websites for illegal downloading. googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1449240174198-2'); ); "I believe that the correct punishment should be one year in prison and that is what I am requesting that the district court hand down in this case," prosecutor Haakan Roswall told the court.Fredrik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm, Peter Sunde and Carl Lundstroem are accused of running The Pirate Bay website and "promoting other people's infringements of copyright laws."On the second day of the trial, which began on February 16, Roswall dropped a separate charge of copying films and music.Founded in 2003, The Pirate Bay makes it possible to skirt copyright fees and share music, film and computer game files using torrent technology, or peer-to-peer links offered on the site.None of the material can thus be found on The Pirate Bay server itself.Roswall insisted that the four defendants were running the site with the intent of promoting illegal downloads of copyrighted material, pointing out that they had made large sums of money on their activities. The four, who have denied any wrongdoing, have been charged with illegally raking in at least 1.2 million kroner (104,000 euros, 131,000 dollars) by facilitating copyright infringement, but Roswall said Monday they could easily have made 10 times that amount. The Pirate Bay claims to have some 22 million users worldwide.Representatives of the movie, music and video games industry are asking for around 117 million kronor (10.1 million euros, 12.7 million dollars) in damages and interest for losses incurred from tens of millions of illegal downloads facilitated by the site.Lawyers representing the industry were to hold their summations later Monday while the defence was scheduled to wrap up the trial on Tuesday. The court is expected to take a few weeks to announce a verdict.(c) 2009 AFP Citation:Prosecutor seeks prison terms in Pirate Bay filesharing case (2009, March 2)retrieved 10 February 2023from -03-prosecutor-prison-terms-pirate-bay.html This document is subject to copyright. Of the five websites named in the lawsuit against Aussie ISPs, three have voluntarily shut down over the summer, in what ended up to be online piracy's darkest year. This includes streaming service SolarMovie, and torrent portals Torrentz(.eu) and TorrentHound.

You also get the option of signing up for the premium version of the site. Premium membership gives you a better ad-free browsing experience, as well as no caching or ads, and dynamic pages. You can get an annual subscription to the site for $54 per month if you pay for a year upfront.

This Brazilian torrent website has an extensive database, and it supports direct downloads and magnet links. This website never reached the notoriety of the Pirate Bay, despite it being around for more than 10-years.

With one of the largest torrent databases online, this site offers you movies, TV Shows, music, documentaries, and any other torrent file you can imagine. The site did have a few safety issues some years ago, but it bounced back from the controversy and remains a top destination for torrent downloads.

Last year, a wallet used by the torrent search engine to accept user donations of Bitcoin revealed that the website was earning less than 10 dollars per day in this way -- likely nowhere near enough to operate long-term.

Unless the cash issue is tackled, pirates gaining something for nothing may be a thing of the past. However, it may be that cryptocurrency mining as an alternative to ads could appeal. After all, file seeders give up their bandwidth to give files to downloaders, and it is this community which keeps all torrenting -- whether legal or illegal -- alive and kicking.

Most countries do have strict copyright laws. Although legal actions taken on torrent downloaders are relatively small in numbers, they do happen. In Japan, a 39-year old man was arrested for downloading anime and other files on P2P software.

As we covered earlier, a torrent tracker is the place where your torrent client goes in order to find a list of peers for any given torrent. These trackers come in two broad categories: private and public.

That said, in certain jurisdictions, particularly in the U.S., there is a possibility of direct legal action by the copyright holder. This is by no means common, as there are generally less than 5,000 copyright infringement lawsuits filed yearly across the entire U.S., and the vast majority of these are unrelated to torrenting.
